Australia's Internet Access

A campaign to protect the people's Internet Access from government and companies.

Monthly Archives: March 2012

Reforms coming as a result of secret meetings between government and American companies

The next changes to Copyright are likely this year and to give powers to corporations ‘copyright holders’ to compel ISPs to eventually terminate Internet Access. It’s an inevitable proposal after NZ adopted three strikes, France did too and USA adopting similar ‘graduation response’. This was also being demanded by USA in the recent TPP treaty.

At the very least, there will be widespread privacy invasion in logging all Internet activity. Internode have stated that while they’re personally against it, they can’t go against the law.

One summary of new AG’s position on copyright: http://www.zdnet.com.au/where-does-roxon-stand-on-copyright-339328991.htm

She doesn’t care about privacy: http://www.cla.asn.au/0805/index.php/articles/articles/minister-roxon-plays-fast-and

She brought in a staunch advocate of IP in order to minimise court issues: http://www.attorneygeneral.gov.au/Media-releases/Pages/2012/First%20Quarter/8-February-2012—Professor-McKeough-to-conduct-ALRC-copyright-review.aspx

There had been questionable surveys by ‘Australian’ [American] collection societies that state piracy would be reduced if Internet Access would be at risk. http://www.efa.org.au/2011/02/17/afact-study/

Ominous statement: “The Gillard Government is determined to get the balance right between providing incentives for creators and innovators and encouraging new opportunities within a digital economy including via the National Broadband Network.

The inquiry will consider whether the exceptions in the Federal Copyright Act are adequate and appropriate in the fast paced digital environment,” Ms Roxon said.

I wonder what exceptions are being removed. Format shifting exception? Or killing Internet access?

AEC is responsible for having the details of all Federal parties. However, it costs time and money (phonecall) to get the party’s contact details. It’s easier if the details were in the provided phonebook that comes free.

Even then, the person will have to call or mail the parties for policies or party information. All this is a significant burden relative to visiting the website with the use of Internet.

Initial commitment

Welcome. This project is currently young with not much proposed changes yet as it is still under development. We would appreciate any help we can get for the four sections:

  1. Understanding campaign
  2. Promotional campaign
  3. How to help page
  4. Making changes in law

The above four are not fully finished. For more information, go to this manually updated TODO: Campaign management page.

We plan to begin the promotion of the campaign once the Internet Access amendment proposal is ready or when the anti-Internet proposals are announced by the government in order to defend against it. You’re still free to pass on the message.
